After ten years as a coach with the U.S. Ski Team, Pete Vordenberg announced on Wednesday that he is resigning from his post as the men’s cross-country coach.
“The foremost reason I am leaving my coaching position is my new family,” said Vordenberg in a press release.
“To do the job the way I would want to do it would require more travel, time and energy than I can give it. I support the whole cross country staff and all our athletes utterly and that means stepping aside.”
Vordenberg skied on the USST for six years and competed in two Olympic Games. Since transitioning to coaching in 2002, he has filled the role of everything from assistant to head coach.
“The U.S. Cross Country Ski Team is clearly sad to see Pete stepping down,” said head coach Chris Grover. “I know this decision has been a very difficult one for him. Pete is passionate about the success of U.S. cross country ski racing.”
“His knowledge, his work ethic and his passion for this team have been a huge part of our step forward as a nation.”

Pete understood a lot, has had great hunches at the right times, setting a tone for success. He has been passionate, uncompromising when compromise wasn’t a good strategy, and has worn well the thick skin necessary in the position he has held. We as a community got the right guy at the right time. Lucky us. Keep inspiring, Pete, especially your child. Thanks for a job greatly appreciated.
